1The analogy

A doorphone by the front door sits quietly most of the time. Press the buzzer outside and the line opens, and only then does anyone inside hear a voice. State your business and someone inside opens the door, or tells you to just leave the package outside.

A voice assistant is that intercom. It stays locked until it hears the word that calls it, and only from that word onward does it start taking in what is said. What it hears gets processed inside, turning on a light, setting an alarm, or coming back out through the speaker as an answer.

You cannot have a long conversation through an intercom, either. Noise outside means things get asked again, and only business that is already arranged for gets handled. A voice assistant is exactly that much, no more.

The buzzer has to be pressed before it opens

A device is not transcribing every sound from the moment it is on. Most of the time, it only scans very short slices of sound, right there on the device, checking whether the fixed wake word came up. That work stays inside the device and never leaves it.

Once the wake word is heard, it starts properly taking in whatever comes after. A light turning on, or a sound, is the signal for "listening now." If it responds without that signal ever appearing, it probably just misheard something similar as the wake word.

That false wake-up is why a conversation sometimes starts at a moment nobody meant it to. If that is unsettling, turning off the microphone, or checking the setting for clearing whatever got recorded, is worth a look.

Speech changes shape several times

Handling one sentence runs through a chain of steps. First the sound turns into text, then that text gets read for what it means and what it is asking for, then the matching task gets carried out, then the result gets turned back into text, and finally, into sound.

A long chain means more places for things to go sideways. Mishear a single word at the sound-to-text step and everything after runs off in the wrong direction entirely. Hear "seven" as "seven thirty," and the alarm goes off at exactly the wrong time, with total precision.

That is why a good voice assistant asks back often. When it is not confident, it does not just act on its guess; it checks once, with something like "did you say seven?" The harder something is to undo, the more that check matters.

Noise makes it mishear

Understanding speech works best in a quiet room, spoken clearly. Overlapping with a television, several people talking at once, or being called from across the room all drag accuracy down noticeably.

Uncommon words are a weak spot too: a person's name, a shop name, an unfamiliar place name. It gets common words right reliably, but a name it has never heard before easily gets swapped for a similar-sounding common word instead. Registering names you say often ahead of time cuts down on this kind of mistake.

It can only do what is already connected

Speech flowing naturally does not mean anything is possible. Turning on a light needs the light already connected; booking an appointment needs a calendar already connected. Anything not connected comes back as "I can't help with that," no matter how clearly it was said.

More connections mean more convenience, but also more to be careful about. Let a voice alone unlock a door or place an order, and whatever the person standing nearby says could get carried out just as easily. Anything touching money or a lock is safer paired with a way to tell voices apart, or a separate confirmation step.

Slower than scanning with your eyes

Speech comes out one piece at a time, in order. That does not suit comparing ten items in a list or skimming a long piece of text. What your eyes could sweep across on a screen has to be listened to from beginning to end through your ears.

That is why a voice assistant fits best when your hands are busy, when looking at a screen is inconvenient, or when the request is short: setting a timer while cooking, asking directions while driving, turning off a light without getting up. When there is a lot to choose from, on the other hand, having a screen to look at alongside it is faster.

3More precisely

Older voice assistants only understood a request if it matched a fixed command sentence exactly. That is why saying it even slightly differently used to fail, no matter how clear the meaning was to a person listening. These days, a language model usually sits behind it, so it can pick out meaning from freer speech, and even follow a conversation across several turns. Still, a wider range of understanding does not mean a wider range of things it can actually do. Doing something for real still requires that feature to be connected, and that part remains a fixed, pre-set list, however naturally the request was phrased.

The comparison breaks down somewhere too. There is a person on the other end of an intercom, so an ambiguous request gets guessed at sensibly. A voice assistant, instead, can turn a word it did not catch into a different, plausible-sounding word. An intercom only opens while the buzzer is held; a voice assistant's microphone stays on the whole time, waiting for the wake word, which is exactly why false wake-ups happen, and why it is worth checking the settings for what gets recorded and when.
